Tingewick, a society formed of medical students from Oxford University, are celebrating an incredible £27,000 raised for two fantastic local causes.
Balancing their fundraising with their medical studies, the fourth year medical students that make up the Tingewick Society, were hard at work fundraising throughout 2024 raising money for local mental health charity Restore, alongside NHS charity, Oxford Hospitals Charity. With fundraising events ranging from a ceilidh to climbing the Three Peaks, the year culminated with the annual Tingewick pantomime – this year creatively named ‘Beauty and the Yeast Infection!’
Tingewick is a charity which is run by medical students at the University of Oxford whilst they work hard across hospitals in Oxfordshire to earn their degrees. Each year, the group selects two charities to support and works throughout the year to create incredible fundraising events. This year the two charities were;
Oxford Hospitals Charity supporting staff and patients across the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Restore is a leading Oxfordshire mental health charity that works to support individuals towards recovery from mental ill health, through therapeutic activity groups, tailored one-to-one coaching, and courses that increase knowledge, awareness, and wellbeing.
Both charities were chosen after direct experience of their services.
Every day, as the medical students are on placement in hospitals in Oxfordshire, the Tingewick team get to see the impact of Oxford Hospitals Charity funding, from patient packs to provide essentials to patients that are admitted without any warning, to cutting-edge medical equipment helping speed up diagnoses – the money raised really does make a difference to patients and staff every day.
On one of these clinical placements, the Tingewick Society had a chance to experience Restore’s work, through their Beehive recovery group, creative workshop, and therapeutic garden. The students saw firsthand how therapeutic interventions outside the hospital setting benefit mental health recovery. Inspired by the visit, they set out to support Restore’s work for better mental health locally.
Athena Henderson, Tingewick Producer for 2024 said:
“It has been an absolute delight to fundraise for both of these wonderful charities this year. The process has on occasion been gruelling but overall truly a joy both in the money raised and in bringing together the medical student community in support of these great causes. We are overjoyed to have raised this much and can’t wait to see what it brings to both charities and most importantly to our Oxfordshire communities. The year has been an unforgettable and incredibly fun experience for the whole committee and the society looks forward to continuing to raise money for our local charities in the years to come.”
Eleanor Jones from Oxford Hospitals Charity
“We never fail to be amazed by the enthusiasm, ingenuity and unending talents of the Tingewick Society who work in and out of our hospitals to make a difference for patient care. This year the money they have raised will go towards funding a Bereavement Support Worker, to support families who have a lost a child in our hospitals. This crucial role, the first of its kind in Oxford hospitals, would not have been possible without their support. A huge thank you to them all!”
Libby Peppiatt, CEO at Restore
“Tingewick’s runners, climbers, dancers, actors and supporters have been incredible, with a determined enthusiasm - from summit to stage - to improve mental health! Restore is incredibly grateful to all who helped make a difference. Each year, Restore supports around 500 local people with their mental health recovery journeys, and thanks to the commitment of Oxford’s medical students, together, we can make a meaningful impact. The funds raised could support a therapeutic recovery worker for several months, who in turn can support and empower around 50 people with their recovery.”
