“I wanted to help Restore because mental health is very important to me personally, as a person who has dealt with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), anxiety, and depression for most of my life. I also felt that the Drunken Knitwits helped my mental health and that of others who had felt isolated in Oxford, and wanted to extend that help to others who might not have such a good support system in the community.
We held a 5-hour “knitathon” in a cocktail bar called “Date Knit”, at which either the knitter or his/her date had to be knitting for the duration of the evening. We were sponsored ahead of time by friends and family via JustGiving fundraising pages.
The event was really fun and we raised a lot of money (over £2000)! It drew a lot of attention and even made for a piece in the Oxford Times.
I would definitely encourage others to fundraise for Restore, since they are so involved with the Oxford community and also showed so much appreciation for what we did. It was a really personal experience compared to fundraising for national or international charities.”
