20/02/2023Taking the first step to better mental health
More often than not in life, taking the first step can be the hardest. From learning to drive, to looking for a new job, stepping towards something new takes courage.
If struggling with mental health, taking the first step towards recovery can feel overwhelming. But, recognising that help is available and making a start, no matter how small, is often the biggest and most important step.
Some tips on taking the first step from Restore‘s Compass Recovery Group:
-
To admit a struggle is hard, but there’s no shame in it. It’s important we’re kind to ourselves. Seeking help is something that everyone needs to do at times.
-
Create and maintain a morning routine. Starting everyday with structure and positivity makes a difference.
-
Start a ‘low pressure plan’. Set manageable and achievable goals to tick-off and start to feel a sense of accomplishment.
-
Actively try to be with others. Whether in-person or online, connections can boost mood, reduce stress and improve self-esteem.
-
Understand that there is support available, for example:
-
The Compass Recovery Group is a weekly online group for seven weeks.
-
Short courses are upcoming at Oxfordshire Recovery College, spending time with others learning and discussing wellbeing.
-
Refer yourself or someone else to Restore’s coaching or recovery programmes.
-
The first step may be hard, but it can be taken and will mark the start of ‘taking control’ of mental health recovery.
