After three years of toil, our stunning mosaic community bench was finally unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Oxford at the Beehive Winter Fair.
Talented volunteer, Olga, began the project with Beehive Recovery Group in 2011, passing on her mosaic expertise to members, who in turn have taught one another how to cut, place and groat the little ceramic pieces to create beautiful designs.
Every winter the bench would be covered for protection from the elements, and each spring work began again to sculpt intricate images of owls, red kites, lizards and beehives. It has been a race to finish before winter fully takes force this year, but it is finally fully grouted, waterproofed and childproofed!
Members said that working on the bench has developed their creative skills, confidence and teamwork. The pride (and relief!) of completion was palpable as it was finally unveiled to the public.
Charlotte has particularly benefited from Olga’s mentorship and new skills, and now creates her own stunning mosaic crafts for sale.
A huge well done to everyone at the Beehive, especially Olga and Charlotte who were particularly active artists. Come along to our garden on Manzil Way to enjoy the masterpiece.
